Lotus flowers and waterlilies are some of my favorite flowers to paint. I have some in my koi fish pond. My koi pond is how I came up with this title, it’s my spot where I feel the most serenity. Even in the winter, I watch my koi float in their dormancy and can feel my blood pressure falling. Come spring, the excitement of seeing the first leaves emerge from the depths of the pond is something I never tire of.
I created this painting with quick broad and loose abstract strokes, it was a very new and freeing experience for me. Sometimes I can paint too tightly, trying to be in control of every stroke. I really feel this particular painting opened up a new way of thinking and painting for me. Almost haphazardly I threw paint down on the canvas after I thought I had ruined it but then it seemed to come together magically after I gave up on being in control. It’s being added to my ongoing collection of lotus flower paintings and mono-prints. I just love the rich dark Prussian blue, greens and teals that make the white lotus flowers pop off the canvas in this painting. White lotus flowers represent serenity and peace.
