At the end of this past May, I had another painting class at Owensville Carnegie Public Library. It was for a Spring scene painting class. I had a great turnout.
I’ve mentioned before when I had a class here last fall, that the set up is just ideal for teaching a painting class. There’s a sink, decent lighting, and a good size room. Plus, it has the most important part which is people that want to paint!
I had some returning students from last fall. Everyone did a fabulous job at creating their version of my spring scene which is shown a the bottom of this post. It’s a row boat at the edge of a pond with a cherry tree nearby that’s beginning to drop it’s petals.
Now, it’s the middle of September and that tree would be starting to turn its leaves! I can’t believe how fast time goes. Yeah, yeah, I know I say it all of the time but it’s so true.
We all had fun and there was lots of laughing and chatting throughout the class which I always love to hear. My style of teaching is to give minimal instruction. First, I start with explaining the easiest way to tackle the inspiration painting that I’ve created. I show them a quick sketch that we do on the blank canvas. Then, I give the basics to mix the colors of paint and offer my suggestions if they ask for them.
I like to encourage my students to think outside of the box. To use their own imaginations to create a scene to their liking. Maybe their scene has a swift river with white water in it instead of a serene pond (which I had one create this!).
It’s all good. Not only good, it’s great when they start making the painting their own. I am just there to help facilitate their vision and maybe nudge a little here and there.
I’m always so happy to see the painters with their finished paintings at the end of the session. They usually are pretty proud of what they’ve created and I couldn’t be more proud either.
Below is my inspiration painting for the class. I have been invited to teach another one in Owensville again this November. It’ll be a winter themed class I believe or possibly Christmas – Maybe I’ll give them a choice. If you’re local and want to check out the library and maybe sign up for the next class click here to go to their website with contact information.
I kinda like how my inspiration piece turned out. So serene and it is reminiscent of times gone by.

Learn more about me on the ‘About’ page under the additional links menu. I’m an artist – a painter mostly and an avid gardener. I paint a variety of subjects including birds, koi fish, my gardens, ponds and flowers as well as anything having to do with nature especially trees and tropical scenes. I also enjoy painting abstracts and have started created more and more of them. My most favorite thing to try to achieve in my painting is is mystery and telling mystical stories.
If you would like to keep up with what I’m doing, I have a newsletter e-mailed about once a month that gives you special status for invitations, birthday greeting and more. I’d love for you to add your email to my Friends and Collectors list!
